Fishing at Spirit Lake

Spirit Lake offers great fishing opportunities for everyone. Whether fly fishing, spin fishing or bait fishing you are sure to have an enjoyable experience fishing at Spirit Lake.

Likely Catch: Most common catch will be Tiger Trout. Utah Fish and Game typically plants the lake each year in June. On average these planted Tiger Trout will range between 10” - 12”. We generally see a healthy population survive the winter and these fish will range between 12” - 16”. On occasion there have been even bigger ones caught. Tiger Trout are aggressive feeders and will go after many different bait presentations. Both dry flies and nymphs work throughout the season. Varieties of spoons, spinners, and crankbaits have all proven successful. There is no live bait restrictions on Spirit Lake so live worms tipped with Powerbait is also a good option.

Possible Catch: Anglers will also have the chance to catch Colorado River Cutthroat Trout. On average, the ones that have been caught in Spirit Lake range between 10” - 12”. We typically recommend fishing the creek downstream from the lake to target these fish. Fly fishing works best for fishing the creek due to the size and shallowness.

Access: There is great public access around the majority of the lake. There are several areas on Spirit Lake Road to pull off and have walking access to the lake. We have one public dock on the West end of the lake near the lodge that allows fishing

Surrounding Area: There are a two other lakes a short hike from Spirit Lake that produce great fishing opportunities. Jessen Lake is a 1 - 1/2 mile hike and Tamarack Lake is a 2 mile hike from the Spirit Lake Trailhead. Both of these are easy hikes for the whole family.
